The Vancouver Asian Film Festival is back in its 26th edition this November, following a successful 25th anniversary last year that celebrated the journey and successes of the festival.
This year, VAFF remains committed to promoting the work of Asian creatives in Canada and around the world, while focusing on representation as a key driver of better equity and opportunities for Asian talent in the industry.
VAFF 2022 continues the hybrid model introduced in the 2021 edition, with 4 days of in-person screenings from November 3 to 6, followed by 7 days of virtual programming that concludes with an in-person closing ceremony on November 13, the last day of the festival.
This year, VAFF promises an exciting array of nearly 100 films, the most the festival has ever seen to date. Canadian stories comprise a major number of those films, with programs such as “O Canada!: Canadian Shorts Program,” “This Too Shall Pass: Canadian Shorts Program,” and “Families of Origin, Families of Choice: Canadian Shorts Program.”
But the main Canadian theme taking centerstage this year is stories from the West coast, a fitting subject matter for the biggest Asian film festival on the West coast. Aptly titled “Westcoast Tales,” these Canadian programs feature a variety of films by Canadian filmmakers ranging from features to documentaries, as well as shorts, representing the rich stories of Asian Canadians on film.
The primary focus of the Westcoast Tales series is to showcase works by local filmmakers and content creators as well as provide an opportunity for community members to interact with the filmmakers through filmmaker talks and panel discussions. The Westcoast Tales programs will be followed by filmmaker Q&As and talks.
In addition to these programs, the series will include a Westcoast Tales Filmmaker Panel. Part of the VAFF Industry Insights Series, the panel is aimed at shining a light on local filmmakers and content creators while offering access for community members to actively participate in discussions with filmmakers.
