Vancouver, BC – June 11, 2019 – The Vancouver Film Festival (VAFF) is proud to present an inaugural Asians in Music Songwriting Competition (AIM), in search of Asian Rockstars.
We focus Asian Canadian/American musicians, singers and songwriters. We feel that there has been a lack of Asian artists in popular music and AIM Music project hopes to change this by launching the Asians in Music Songwriting Competition.
Twelve (12) original winning songs will be selected by OCTOBER 3 and a compilation album will be produced to be sent to Music Supervisors placing songs in film and television projects locally, nationally and internationally. Six (6) of the Twelve (12) selected songs will be selected from artists residing and working in British Columbia and the remaining six (6) winning songs will be open to legal residents of Canada (excluding Quebec) and the fifty (50) United States, the District of Columbia (excluding Rhode Island and Maine) who self-identifies as East Asian, Southeast Asian or South Asian and is 18 years or older. All songs must have lyrics, be in English and under Five (5) minutes in length. As people may not know music sync (film & tv placement) is one of the few remaining avenues for musical artists to get paid for their music. VAFF wants to help songwriters get their music heard and placed.
“I want Asian singers, songwriters and bands to dig out their songs that they feel had no home and AIM will give them a home and hopefully help kick off a dream career in music.” Barb Lee Festival Founder and President
Enter the competition from June 15, 2019 – August 15, 2019.

About the Asians in Movie, Music and Media
Asians in Movies, Music and Media (AIM) was launched by VAFF in 2016 as part of VAFF’s 20th Anniversary celebrations. VAFF identified that there needs to be more Asian representation in all the creative arts industries. The last two years VAFF focused on bringing attention to Asian Canadian/American writers and actors with the AIM Calendar.
About the Vancouver Asian Film Festival
The Vancouver Asian Film Festival Society (VAFF) is a not-for-profit organization that celebrates diversity in film. The longest-running Canadian film festival of its kind, VAFF was founded by independent filmmaker and writer Barbara K. Lee in 1995 and debuted in September 1997. VAFF is entirely organized and produced by a group of dedicated volunteers, and is made possible by generous financial support from corporate sponsors, public funders and private donors. Organizers are expecting close to 4,000 audience members over the four-day festival. Now on its 23rd year, this four day festival incorporates the theme of NO LIMITASIANS, which celebrates the achievements of Asian diaspora artists and empowers aspiring artists of Asian heritage to continue pushing boundaries and challenging expectations. As new filmmakers take the spotlights to tell authentic stories, they break moulds and expose the world to a multitude of voices.
