AIM Music Industry Day - Sync Summit

OVERVIEW

Are you a Musician or Composer who would like to get your music into Film, TV and Media?

Join us on May 27, 2023, during Asian Heritage Month, for a full-day program of industry feedback on your music, panel discussion and a legal workshop to set you up for sync success!

This event will be held at the Djavad Mowafaghian World Art Centre, located on the unceded territories of the the xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam), Sḵwx̱wú7mesh Úxwumixw (Squamish), səl̓ilw̓ətaʔɬ (Tsleil-Waututh) peoples, in Downtown Vancouver.

Over the course of the day, we will show you ways to monetize your music, provide in-person listening sessions with industry specialists to showcase your work, and provide career workshops to enhance your legal and systems knowledge. Throughout this summit, you will have the opportunity to connect with other music creatives, including a celebratory showcase at Guilt & Co on the same evening.

We invite all who self-identify as those of Asian descent*, and have at least one recorded and mastered song, to apply to showcase at the summit.

The goal of this workshop is to elevate and showcase Asian-Canadian artists and create more international opportunities for career success through placements in Film, TV, Games and Media.

There are only 30 places available. Applications will be reviewed on a first-come-first served basis. Approved participants will be invited to secure their spot. Applications will close once spots fill up, so make sure to apply early!

Cost: $25.00 ($75.00 up front, with a $50 rebate upon completion of the day). “not including eventbrite service fees”

*Asian Descent includes East Asia (including People’s Republic of China [incl. These Official Summit Rules and Regulations, as amended by Vancouver Asian Film Festival (“VAFF”) from time to time (these “Rules”), govern the Asians In Music Sync Summit (the “Event”) described below. These Rules exempt VAFF and other persons from liability and contain other important provisions. When you submit an Application (as defined below), you acknowledge and signify that you have read, understood and agreed to be bound by these Rules. If you do not agree with these Rules, you may not participate in the Event.

MEET THE PRESENTERS

Ben Chan - MNRK

Ben Chan is the Director of Licensing and Music Publishing Administration, who helps to oversee and handle various catalog at MNRK. He has worked in the industry for over 14 years, starting his career in the field at Last Gang Records. Today, with catalog that still includes Last Gang, as part of the record label and publishing company, he pitches, negotiates, and licenses music for film, television, video games, and soundtracks, along with any new media platforms that become available. Through publishing administration, he works with various writers on copyrights, royalty statement + accounting, and from time to time handles the coordination between writers to work together for collaboration on song ideas.

Rudy Chung - Netflix

Rudy Chung is an executive on the Netflix music creative team, helping oversee music for their original films including You People, The Adam Project, Hustle, and The Gray Man. Prior to that he was partner at HTGR where his music supervision credits included The Last Dance (ESPN/Netflix), Minari (A24), Bad Trip (MGM/Netflix), Silicon Valley (HBO), Andre The Giant (HBO), and Wu-Tang Clan: Of Mics And Men (Showtime). Rudy is also the founding partner of Pusher, an award-winning artist and composer agency that specializes in licensing and creating music for film & tv marketing campaigns. A Detroit native, Rudy is a graduate of the University of Pennsylvania and a proud member of the Guild of Music Supervisors, where he is a two-time GMS Award winner.

Jeff Young

Jeff Young is a senior Entertainment & Media lawyer and Trademark Agent licensed in both British Columbia, Canada and California, USA, who routinely handles film, television and music deals.” Jeff Young is an active member of the Law Society of British Columbia, Canada and a member of the State Bar of California, USA. Jeff is also a registered and active Canadian Trademark Agent. Jeff is also a Certified NFT Expert.

Emily Clarke - Music BC

Emily Clarke is the Program Coordinator at Music BC. This role entails planning and coordination programs and events, keeping programs on schedule within the budgets and making sure things run smoothly the day of events. She helps support artists through specific programs like Music BC Travel Grants, ARC, and Let’s Hear It. She is here to support program growth and development as needed.
Music BC is the voice of the BC Music industry locally, domestically and internationally, through active advocacy for funding, policy, red tape reduction, tax credits and creator’s rights. The organization also advocates at international trade missions to promote business and creative opportunities.

Geoff Sherr - DISCO

Geoff is a Business Development Specialist at DISCO, joining the company in early 2021. Prior to joining DISCO, Geoff worked in various capacities within the music industry, including artist management, publishing and music supervision. He was the first General Manager of Squeak E. Clean, the award-winning commercial music company.

Racquel Villagante - SOCAN

Racquel Villagante is the Creative Executive at the helm of the SOCAN Los Angeles office with over 7 years working in the music business. She formerly held the position of SOCAN A&R Representative in both Vancouver & Toronto, supporting and connecting songwriter and producer talent across Canada and the US. Prior to her career at SOCAN, she had managed and consulted artists via Yes Lioness Inc., talent wrangled for stadium tours, curated and promoted shows, and label managed for an indie record label.
